Michael Kirwan
presents:

Original Art Up For Auction
Featuring drawings and cartoons

Michael was recently searching through his closet and found some great, original drawings and cartoons that he thought he would share with those who appreciate his art.

These images will be mostly "R"-rated compared to the usual rating for much of his art.  While these special pieces are not the typical size or detailed settings found on most of the art for sale on his website, these smaller drawings are a great way to start collecting original art by Michael.  Many of these images have been previously published for everyone to enjoy with one hand or two.  Check the auctions each week to see new works of art available for bidding.

Lambda Legal and Prism Comics
presents

"Life Without Fair Courts" Contest

Lambda Legal has teamed up with Prism Comics, and media sponsor, the Advocate, to launch a nationwide contest to find the best representation of what this country could look like without fair courts.

What can you enter?

A cartoon, illustration or graphic art panel that shows what life would be like if courts weren't there to make fair decisions on LGBT issues or any other civil rights violations.

The concept can be interpreted broadly — use your imagination!

With themes of

"Life Without Internet Privacy" and

"Life Without Freedom From Religion,"

Michael Kirwan has entered

this new work of art into the contest.

One Download Too Many

It's very difficult for me to recognize just how the judicial system champions America's gay citizenry with any real enthusiasm. What protections and accommodations we have managed to secure in the last forty years still don't vest us with the same equal rights afforded straight people in this country. It has recently come to light that the current administration is deliberately seeding Justice Departments all across the nation with graduates from law schools operated by rabid fundamentalist Christian organizations. What validity will pro-gay legislation have if those handpicked officials arbitrarily refuse to prosecute civil rights laws designed to ensure our safety because of their moral convictions? We now have a quasi-elected, dynastic head-of-state who disregards international law and blithely renders the Constitution of the United States in tattered shreds with his fervor to reshape the world as he sees fit. General Peter Pace recently declared that homosexuals were too morally unclean to murder Arabs and not one of the presidential contenders demanded his resignation. I am appalled by the complacency of a vast number of queers, I am horrified to witness the ascension of the hate and fear mongers disguised as religious zealots, but I am also encouraged and inspired by entities such as the Lambda Legal that valiantly take on the system to cement our rightful place in society.

— Michael Kirwan

The finalist entries will be posted online through the

Lambda Legal website on or around May 21, 2007.

Visitors to the website will be able to submit their votes for who they believe is the best entry. Only one vote per valid email address will be allowed. The entry that receives the highest number of online votes will be deemed the first prize winner, second highest will be the second prize winner and third prize will be the third prize winner.

AKA Lounge
presents

Lewd Nite

The purpose of Lewd Nite is to allow visual artists to show offensive artwork. You won't find paintings of palm trees, or pet portraiture. No landscapes or ho-hum watercolors. Lewd Nite will exhibit frightening, repulsive and wrong subject matter. This work will incite, bother and disturb. The show will offend you spiritually, emotionally, racially, sexually and politically. We are not only looking to push the envelope, we would like the envelope to disappear so that we may see what is past it. The work will question your ideas about what is acceptable in the visual arts.

Artist's Statement

I tracked down and studied as many porn illustrations as I could find when I was originally approached by Dugent Publishing to try my hand at erotic artwork. These many years later I can't recall the artists or their output, but I can still remember noticing that the women depicted were interchangeable, vacant-eyed mannequins fulfilling some guy's lustful expectations with zombie-like enthusiasm. I determined that if I was going to do this kind of work I'd have to take it in a different direction. I wasn't going to portray female representations as debased, demeaned, humiliated or ridiculously compliant. I invested them with character, with motive and personality while giving them their own sexual agenda. I wanted the male readers to get comfortable with the concept of appreciating actual women with individual features instead of lobotomized Barbi dolls as potential sex partners. I also wanted to elevate the profile of the male characters who were typically shown as repulsive, diminutive sexually-obsessed losers scoring the impossible playmate. I wanted the men to reflect and compliment the readers by being reasonably attractive, well-groomed and sensual (as opposed to simply ravenous). Some editors balked at my subtle upgrades to the genre, but eventually they understood that the guys buying these magazines were no longer those same readers raised with that 40's and 50's mentality about the roles of men and women in sexual situations. I think I got it right. I'm still working and you can find my artwork regularly in SCORE magazines like "18eighteen".

The unique figural aesthetic of Michael Kirwan depicts a dizzying array of obscure fetishes and indulgent scenarios in lurid color. Kirwan's work falls into two categories: that work which he does to make a living and that which he does for his own personal satisfaction as an artist. Being a gay man who is often called upon to represent heterosexual scenes in his professional life give his commercial work a unique perspective. He identifies as much with the male figures (the subject of his work) as with the female (the object) and as such objectifies neither. His characters seem to express a measure of empathy with the intended audience: they are the viewer in a way, or the person he fantasizes himself to be. It is this connection with the subject that makes Kirwan's illustrations special. They are not empty shells filled with sexuality, they seem more like real growing creatures expressing a sexuality of their own.

The work on display in the exhibition is from Kirwan's professional life. The work he does i
